Worms in the conservative core...

Being a true conservative at heart, I am stymied as to how our country could have let our economic situation get so out of hand. Read this article about the cost of the Iraq war from the Washington Post.
Since Paul and I got married I have tried and tried to convert to his more liberal view of money. He gets aggravated by my constant budget consciousness and money concerns. Yes, I'm slow, but it took me a long time to finally realize that my concern about money made him feel like I felt he wouldn't be a good provider. Well, that's just not true. I'm sure he'll be an exceptional doctor and he's incredibly skilled and capable. I'm just a conservative and he's just not as much, or maybe I'm just still super corset tied, right wing, conservative and he's more normal. Well, despite my efforts to relax, chill, live more, not worry and trust and be optimistic, it doesn't change the fact that deep down I am who I am, and I think I will worry about med school debt until we are paying it back, and I will worry about our country's immense debt until we are on our way up instead of down.
I'd love it if anyone out there could talk some liberal sense into my thick head. It sure would make things easier if I could just stop worrying about it all.

I am SO with you. I feel guilty every time I spend money, and I have no idea how we go through so much of it every year. It gives me a terrible conscience, because there are so many people in the world with so much less than we have!

But as far as the national debt goes... it's GOTTA GO! I'll vote for just about anybody who can say the words "fiscal responsibility" or "balanced budget" with a straight face. Do ANY of them even take those ideas seriously?!? We've gotta get our country back on its feet and stop paying our hard-earned tax dollars in interest to OTHER COUNTRIES! BOO to that!

Don't get down about being conservative about money! I used to be liberal about it, but married a true conservative- your opposite situation and I gave up and let me tell you that being conservative has saved us! Darren was laid off in January and with the economy being so bad, he hasn't found a job yet and living in one of the most expensive areas in the country, THANK HEAVENS for his conservativeness!!! We wouldn't have made it with out our savings. You never know when you are going to need it!

I also consider myself a conservative when it comes to spending- it literally was the thorn in Devon's side when we were first married. I think when you have your own profession and make money work for you on your own, it can be challenging to bring your spouse on board especially if they are not very good managers of money. I agree there needs to be better fiscal responsibility and spending. What a fun post Melody!

I LOVE Ron Paul! I'm so with you in this post. Our over-sized government makes me ill. I'm so sad that he won't be our candidate. I'll have such a hard time voting this year...
